Artwork The Birth of the Butterflies: More about the painting
In the earliest days of the world, there was no death.
When a young cockatoo fell from the trees and could not be awakened, the animals assumed the spirits had changed it into another form.
They called for volunteers to go into the sky for a winter, and a group of caterpillars rose in a great cloud.
When spring began, a pair of excited dragonflies ushered them back to earth - transformed into colourful butterflies.
